This week, we welcomed David Cantor for a rare insight into the mind and technique of a passionate street-photographer.

David has felt a strong affinity for the East End of London from an early age and street portraiture in the area around Brick Lane and Spitalfields is his focus.  He enjoys the interaction with people from all walks of life, ethnicity and backgrounds, and many of his photographs come about as a result of approaching complete strangers. When asked if he takes portraits, David says, “I photograph people, the portrait is the outcome”.  He says he enjoys 'getting under the skin of the place.'

He has successfully published 2 books 'Brick Lane Life (Sold Out) and 'Conversations' (On Sale) with an upcoming exhibition from 2-29 May. His photograph of ‘Abdel’ was selected to promote the exhibition of the winners of the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize 2016 at the National Portrait Gallery, and was shortlisted for the British Photography Awards 2021 in the Portrait category.  He regularly supports Tower Hamlets Black History Month, and his work has been featured in Black + White Magazine, as recently as February 2022.

In summary, he advised: 'Talk to people you don't know.; Find a place that makes you happy and where you have a connection.; Stray outisde your comfort/compliance zone.; Consider your carbon foot-print.'
